Our take

Motive is worth comparing when you want driver logs, inspections and vehicle information connected to the office. Selected users describe useful help with daily workflows, but other accounts make connection recovery and equipment changes important parts of the buying decision. Try the full driver routine on your own phones and trucks, including a log correction and inspection transfer. Then compare the written subscription against how often your fleet changes: the gateway is only one part of the commitment, and leaving early can leave a balance to pay.

What stands out

A closer look at Motive

Driver experience

What customers report

Two accounts describe effective help with driver or administrator tasks. A fleet safety manager also values having inspection and vehicle information together.

Use the demo to complete a normal workday: connect, inspect, check duty time, review an edit and present logs. Include the person who handles older records and exceptions in the office.

Research context

The March–September 2026 feedback is largely critical and includes purchase and cancellation experiences, as well as a coach operator. It does not establish fault frequency or outcomes for similar truck fleets.

Driver logs and inspections

Gateway and phone setup

The Driver App connects to the Vehicle Gateway over Bluetooth. Select the correct vehicle inside the app and grant the requested permissions.

Vehicle Gateway installation supports different light- and heavy-duty diagnostic connections, including OBD-II, J1939, J1708 and RP1226. Match the cable to each vehicle.

Motive says the Driver App retains logs and location data without cellular coverage. The Bluetooth connection to the gateway remains a separate requirement.

The updated pairing flow requires Driver App v96 or later; VG3 requires firmware 103000 or later. Confirm supported phones and installed versions during setup.

The gateway collects GPS and vehicle information such as fault codes, fuel level and odometer data. Cameras and Wi-Fi are separate capabilities to discuss in the quote.

Support and administration

Motive publishes 24/7 phone, chat, email and web-form support, with live chat accessible from the Driver App.

The published guide covers app/OS updates, power, vehicle selection, Bluetooth and driver-profile checks, with escalation to support if connection problems persist.

System-wide incident information is on Motive’s separate status page. Its support guide says an outage indicator is not available directly inside the Driver App or Fleet Dashboard.

Account closure is handled by the account/support teams. Support can identify the account manager and pass along a callback request.

Subscription and equipment order

Custom quote. Request a separate breakdown for Vehicle Gateway, cables, subscription and optional products; the public pricing route leads to a contact form.

The order form sets the initial term. Standard terms provide 12-month automatic renewals unless changed by the order form, with at least 30 days’ written non-renewal notice.

Standard early-termination terms require notice and payment of the remaining full subscription balance, plus applicable equipment fees. Separate termination-for-cause provisions also exist.

Published terms allow a credit-card processing fee up to 2.99%; ACH and debit payments are excluded from that fee.

If a hardware trial is offered, the standard terms require return within 30 days after it ends to avoid replacement charges. Confirm the actual trial agreement.

Confirm device quantities, compatible cables, delivery, enabled features and all fees on the order form. Hardware and software commitments should be clear before installation.
